(EN) We are pleased to present Soft on the Inside, a solo exhibition by the Peruvian artist Maria Abaddon at Verduyn in Moregem, Belgium.
Maria Abaddon is best known for his textile tableaus and sculptures, marked by the vivid color of thread, wool, felting, and embroidery—in the tradition of Cecilia Vicuna, Sheila Hicks, or Chiharu Shiota. Delving into the visceral and the macabre, the Peruvian artist uncovers humanity’s complexity in all its layers and inner structures. His visceral and almost carnal visual language characterizes an ongoing conflict between our internal attributes and a contemporary condition of chaos, discussing mortality, isolation, societal issues, violence, and the body.
In Soft on the Inside, large textile tableaus and an installation of watercolors and small-scale felt pieces of wet and needle felting with natural wool are accompanied by an almost immersive, so-called soft sculpture of a human figure constructed by embroidery and crocheting. By doing so, the Peruvian artist aims to portray architectural spaces and landscapes constructed by layers resembling skin, organic patterns, bumps, and textures as if built on the inside. As a result, Abaddon juxtaposes the anthropomorphic with the architectural, the internal with the external, and the soft with the voracious.
Born in 1988 in Lima, Peru, where the artist continues to work and reside, Maria Abaddon achieved a BA at the National School of Fine Arts in Peru (2007-2014), followed by artist residencies in Nayarit, Mexico (2015) and in Buenos Aires, Argentina (2019). Individual recognitions encompass finalist selections for Alliance Française (2019), IPAE Award (2019 & 2021), ICPNA Contemporary Art (2021), and the XIII National Painting Prize by the Central Reserve Bank of Peru(2023). Notable solo exhibitions in Lima, Peru, include at Ginsberg Gallery and Callao Monumental. Participation in institutional group exhibitions took place at, among others, the Centro Cultural de Espana in Lima, Peru; the Cultural Palace in Warsaw, Poland; the Centro Cultural Britanico in Lima, Peru; the Centro Cultural PUCP in Lima, Peru; the Centro Cultura de Bellas Artes in Lima, Peru, and the Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC) in Lima, Peru.

(NL) Met genoegen presenteren wij "Soft on the Inside," een solotentoonstelling van de Peruaanse kunstenaar Maria Abaddon bij Verduyn in Moregem, België.
Maria Abaddon staat vooral bekend om zijn textiele tableaus en beeldhouwwerken, gekenmerkt door levendige kleuren van draad, wol, vilt en borduurwerk, in de traditie van kunstenaars zoals Cecilia Vicuna, Sheila Hicks en Chiharu Shiota. Duikend in het viscerale en macabere, onthult de Peruaanse kunstenaar de complexiteit van de mens in al zijn lagen en innerlijke structuren. Zijn visuele taal, bijna lichamelijk en carnavalesk, kenmerkt een voortdurende strijd tussen onze interne kenmerken en een hedendaagse chaos, waarbij onderwerpen als sterfelijkheid, isolatie, maatschappelijke kwesties, geweld en het lichaam worden besproken.
In "Soft on the Inside" worden grote textiele tableaus en een installatie van aquarellen en kleine viltstukken van nat- en naaldvilten met natuurlijke wol vergezeld door een bijna meeslepende, zogenaamde "soft sculpture" van een menselijke figuur, geconstrueerd met borduurwerk en haken. Hiermee wil de Peruaanse kunstenaar architectonische ruimtes en landschappen portretteren die zijn opgebouwd uit lagen die lijken op huid, organische patronen, bobbels en texturen alsof ze aan de binnenkant zijn gebouwd. Als gevolg hiervan plaatst Abaddon het antropomorfe tegenover het architectonische, het interne tegenover het externe en het zachte tegenover het vraatzuchtige.
Geboren in 1988 in Lima, Peru, waar de kunstenaar nog steeds werkt en woont, behaalde Maria Abaddon een bachelordiploma aan de Nationale School voor Schone Kunsten in Peru (2007-2014), gevolgd door kunstenaarsresidenties in Nayarit, Mexico (2015) en Buenos Aires, Argentinië (2019). Individuele erkenningen omvatten finalistselecties voor Alliance Française (2019), IPAE Award (2019 & 2021), ICPNA Contemporary Art (2021) en de XIII Nationale Schilderprijs van de Centrale Reservebank van Peru (2023). Opvallende solotentoonstellingen in Lima, Peru, vonden plaats in Ginsberg Gallery en Callao Monumental.
