Milan Jespers’ pictural practice draws on photographs and documents from historical, medical and anthropological archives - materials reminiscent of 19th- and early-20th-century visual culture.
Jespers recontextualises these fragmented sources through a highly layered and unconventional use of watercolour, creating works that echo the solemnity and stillness of early photography. By combining archival motifs with contemporary elements, he constructs a deliberately loose visual narrative that questions how Western history depicts bodies, power structures, and notions of nature.
His work becomes an ode to looking - transforming, for the duration of an exhibition, our relationship with the past and the present.
