José Luis Carranza
°1981, Born in Lima, Perú.
Lives and works in lima.
Jose Luis Carranza’s work can be described as Neo-Baroque. Studying art in Lima meant visiting colonial churches and learn to love painting as a superior craft and be submitted to an imagery created to provoke fear among the newly converted natives. From there on, Carranza started his long journey of appropriation and interpretation of art history, mythology and religious narratives. That is how he created his surreal word, cannibalizing European culture with the tools of tropical exuberance.
