Dodi Espinosa
°1985, Mexico City, Mexico.
Lives and works in Antwerp, Belgium
Dodi Espinosa is a Mexican-Belgian multimedia artist based in Antwerp.
His multidisciplinary practice spans sculpture, installation, painting,
printmaking, performance, as well as meditation workshops and rituals,
with a focus on healing, collective memory, and political consciousness.
Espinosa engages with themes such as migration, queerness, mental
health, and the enduring effects of colonialism, employing a strong and
intentional visual language.
Often drawing on archaeological references from Latin America and
beyond, Espinosa explores cross-cultural systems of belief, particularly
shamanism, mindfulness practices, and the sacredness of non-human beings
across ancient civilizations. His work reflects on the aesthetics of
power while resisting fixed stylistic identities, maintaining an open
and investigative approach.
A significant part of Espinosa’s practice is dedicated to the cultural
and geopolitical histories of the banana. Through this motif, he
addresses extractivism, monoculture, and the colonial legacy embedded in
the global fruit trade, positioning the banana as a lens through which
to examine broader narratives of exploitation and resistance.
