Lives and works between Lisbon and Fortaleza.
Julia Aragão captures the cultural atmosphere of northeastern Brazil through delicate landscape and still life paintings on solid wood, linen, or embroidered fabric. Her work evokes ethereal, melancholic, and mystical notions, bridging the peculiarities of the Global South with broader human contemplative states.
Júlia Aragão, 1997, works and lives between Lisbon and Fortaleza. Painting is the main axis of my work, where I elaborate on my affective imaginary, It’s origin being from my experience and the family stories I grew up listening to. The ethereal, the melancholy and mysticism of everyday life are present in my pictorial elaboration, deeply influenced by the Symbolists, the Barbizon School, the Impressionists and Brazil’s popular culture. In my practice I also often mention the interiors of homes, the views from the window, the noises from the roof at night, the mystery of the plants and the stories told in whisper and murmur.
