(EN) With As She Is, Verduyn Gallery presents a group exhibition featuring a selection of works by Iryna Maksymova, Tschiegg, Vanessa Van Meerhaeghe, and Nina Minnebo. The space unfolds as a conversation about what it means to be a “woman” in society.
By bringing together the works of Iryna Maksymova, Tschiegg, Vanessa Van Meerhaeghe, and Nina Minnebo in a single pavilion, no linear narrative emerges but – instead – a field of resonances and frictions takes shape. The works do not contradict one another, but continuously entangle and disentangle, allowing meanings to shift and reconfigure.
The Ukrainian artist Iryna Maksymova (°1991, Ukraine) presents a narrative rich in playful elements and wit. To her, (female) tenderness is a weapon of inner strength, even as adversity accumulates in the surrounding world. In her visual language, body, animal, myth, and landscape are intricately interwoven.
For the French artist Tschiegg (°1966, France), painting is not a depiction of the world as it is, but as it is experienced: layered, unstable, and deeply relational. Bodies, gardens, animals, and landscapes flow into one another, forming spaces where an alternative reality reflects the inner world.
Vanessa Van Meerhaeghe’s (°1974, Belgium) work consists of everyday observations on how we adapt to social expectations. Entering her work is like stepping into a theatre of intimacy. We move through bedrooms or catch groups of female friends in unguarded moments. We witness routines filled with decoration, self-care, diets, and trends that serve as a mirror to our own habits.
Nina Minnebo (°1987, Belgium), in turn, seeks beauty in the grotesque and captures human imperfections. She confronts us with what we often see in the mirror: a distorted version of ourselves. A project, a body we subject to diets, exercise… our human attempt to sculpt ourselves. Never finished, always in progress.
In this group exhibition, (female) identity is not presented as a fixed given, but as something that emerges in our relationship to images, memories, expectations, and the gazes of others — as well as our own.
Who you are is, for As She Is, less important than how you experience, are shaped, and interpret the world around you. Identity is not an essence, but a process. Something that, in the words of Simone de Beauvoir, is continuously becoming.

(NL) Met As She Is presenteert Verduyn Gallery een groepstentoonstelling met een selectie werk van Iryna Maksymova, Tschiegg, Vanessa Van Meerhaeghe en Nina Minnebo. De ruimte vormt een conversatie over wat het betekent om ‘een vrouw’ te zijn in de samenleving.
Door de werken van Iryna Maksymova, Tschiegg, Vanessa Van Meerhaeghe en Nina Minnebo samen te brengen in één paviljoen, ontstaat geen lineair narratief, maar een veld van resonanties en fricties. De werken spreken elkaar niet tegen, maar schuiven voortdurend over en langs elkaar heen, waardoor betekenissen verschuiven en zich herconfigureren.
De Oekraïense Iryna Maksymova (°1991, Oekraïne) brengt een verhaal vol speelse elementen en kwinkslagen. Voor haar is (vrouwelijke) tederheid een wapen van innerlijke kracht, ook wanneer in de wereld rondom de tegenslagen zich opstapelen. In haar beeldtaal zijn lichaam, dier, mythe en landschap met elkaar verweven.
Voor de Franse Tschiegg (°1966, Frankrijk) is schilderen geen weergave van de wereld zoals die is, maar zoals die wordt beleefd: gelaagd, instabiel en diep relationeel. Lichamen, tuinen, dieren en landschappen vloeien in elkaar over en vormen ruimtes waar een alternatieve realiteit het innerlijke reflecteert.
Vanessa Van Meerhaeghe’s (°1974, België) werk bestaat uit alledaagse observaties over hoe we ons aan sociale verwachtingen aanpassen. Haar werk betreden is als een theater van intimiteit binnengaan. We stappen slaapkamers binnen of betrappen vriendinnen op onbewaakte momenten. We zijn getuige van routines vol decoratie, zelfzorg, diëten en trends die dienen als spiegel voor onze eigen gewoontes.
Nina Minnebo (°1987, België) zoekt dan weer schoonheid in het groteske en capteert de imperfecties van mensen. Ze confronteert ons met wat we vaak zien in de spiegel: een vervormde versie van onszelf. Een project, een lichaam dat we onderwerpen aan diëten, sport ... onze menselijke poging om een sculptuur te maken van onszelf. Nooit af, altijd in uitvoering.
In deze groepsexpo wordt (vrouwelijke) identiteit niet als een vaststaand gegeven gepresenteerd, maar als iets dat ontstaat in onze eigen relatie tot beelden, herinneringen, verwachtingen en de blikken van anderen maar ook onszelf.
Wie je bent, is voor As She Is minder belangrijk dan hoe je ervaart, gevormd wordt en de wereld rondom jou interpreteert. Identiteit is geen essentie, maar een proces — iets wat, in de woorden van Simone de Beauvoir, voortdurend wordt geworden.
