Val Smets (b. 1991, Luxembourg) lives and works in Brussels and Luxembourg. She holds a BFA from La Cambre (ENSAV), Brussels (BE), and an MFA in Painting from the Academy of Fine Arts, Uniarts Helsinki (FI). Her work has been presented in solo exhibitions at Rabouan Moussion (FR), Esther Verhaeghe Art Concept (BE), Galerie Zimmermann Kratochwill (AT), and Valerius Gallery (LU). In 2022, she presented Bittersweet Invaders, a year-long installation at Kunsthaus Graz. She has also participated in group exhibitions at Better Go South (DE), Fir Gallery (CN), Das Weisse Haus (AT), Galerie Dumonteil (FR), and Wilhelmina’s Gallery (GR), among others, as well as major art fairs including Art Paris, BAD+ Bordeaux, and Luxembourg Art Week.
Smets has been an artist-in-residence at Das Weisse Haus (Vienna), the Styria Artist in Residence programme, Graz (AT), and the Utö Residency in the Åland Islands. In 2022, she was nominated for the Edward Steichen Award Residency in New York. Her work was published by Fundação de Serralves on the occasion of the 2022 exhibition in Serralves Park, and she was commissioned to develop a project for the Red House, the diplomatic residence designed by Ricardo Bofill architecture in Tirana, 2025.
Her works are held in public collections including the Luxembourg Ministry of Culture, Kunsthaus Graz, and the Helmut Marko Collection, as well as in private collections in Belgium, Austria, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Brazil, and Finland.
