Ulla Hase

°1966, Kiel, Germany.
Lives and works in Brussels, Belgium.

Ulla Hase's work addresses the questions of physical and intellectual knowledge. Reading, watching, or listening to facts does not necessarily mean that we truly understand them. This leaves us not in a position to react to them. Her work addresses this gap, primarily through drawing. It is a contemplative and sculptural work that emphasizes the personal realm of experience to challenge the digital stream of images and information.

She creates interfaces by modeling both the temporal and spatial aspects. In the act of drawing, she transforms her surroundings – images, words, and sounds – into movements and gestures. Through condensation and concentration, she seeks materiality, physical presence, and sensuality, even when none seem to exist. She develops her drawings over long periods of time. At every moment of the work, her mind and body coordinate in the space of the paper. For her, drawing is a means of transformation, a physical and mental space in perpetual movement. She draws on paper with simple office pens. In the process of drawing, her questions come to life through a multitude of lines. Drawing means thinking with your hand. Listening. Feeling. Intensifying. Making something tangible. Through condensation and extension, the drawing reveals its own potential.
