Ruth Devriendt

°1991, Bruges, Belgium.
Lives and works in Ghent, Belgium.

Ruth Devriendt’s artistic pursuit is an everlasting voyage aimed at translating the marvels of our surroundings and our existence as ‘beings’. Her curiosity is piqued by the human condition and its impact on the environment. She meticulously weaves together forgotten materials and identities, capturing the fringes and unraveling edges of society. Utilizing paint, needle, thread, graphite, and wax, she sculpts her images akin to fashioning an organic living entity from scratch - starting with the skin - the canvas - and evolving to the bones - the frame. Observations serve as the cornerstone of her creative process. Her paintings defy convention, sewn, torn, and inverted to yield wrinkles, bellies, with yarn either loose or tethered. A spectacle for curious paleontologists and enthusiasts of wonder. You're graciously invited to explore with liberated eyes and engage in an experience akin to possession.
