Stephan Balleux
°1974, Brussels, Belgium.
Lives and works in Bierges, Belgium.
The multidisciplinary artistic work of Stephan Balleux, expressed through a variety of mediums (painting, drawing, animated video, sculpture, etc.), resembles a reflective quest into the essence and meaning of pictorial practice. His work explores the illusionistic techniques made possible by imagery to question human perception, creating visual compositions that challenge the observer’s expectations. A recurring element in his work is the fluidity of materials, whether natural or artificial. He also draws on historical (general and art history) and cultural references (notably zoology, cinema, architecture, anthropology, and literature) to enrich his reflection and deepen his inquiry into the human condition. His recent approach revolves around questioning the ongoing paradigm shift that is disrupting not only the perception of images but also their production, driven by the rise of generative algorithms.
