(EN) After a series of group exhibitions, we are pleased to present Marc Janssens’ first solo exhibition at Verduyn Gallery; A Fake Goodbye—an intimate look at loss, memory, childhood, farewell, and human fragility.
Marc Janssens is a contemporary sculptor who distinguishes himself with his powerful and fragile figures that are almost overflowing with emotional tension. From ceramics to bronze, paper to wood, iron wire to found objects. Marc Janssens’ recognizable visual imagery is poetically dissected. Each piece is a conversation piece with its own story and expression, but at the same time has something universal. Janssens does not show a human being, but the human being. An exterior of the inner man that seems to lurk within each of us—after all the walls around us are torn down and we are stripped of our facades. Between tenderness and humour, fantasy and reality, obscenity and intimacy.
Born in 1969 in Herentals, Belgium, Marc Janssens studied Plastic Arts at SISA in Antwerp, Applied Graphics at Sint-Lucas in Antwerp, and Sculpture at the Academy in Mol. The Belgian sculptor enjoyed international residencies in Majiayao and Yunnan Xishuangbanna, China, and Huahin, Thailand. His work has been shown at the Kunstenfestival in Watou (2017), the international biennale for ceramics in Haacht (2015), and the Beeldenbiennale in Beerse (2008), as well as at renowned art fairs in Amsterdam, Oxford, London, Hamstead, Rotterdam, Shanghai, Cologne and Brussels. In addition, Janssens was exhibited at public institutes and institutions, such as the Flemish Mining Museum in Beringen and national cultural centers. Marc Janssens lives and works in Meerhout, Belgium.

(NL) Na een reeks groepstentoonstellingen mogen wij u met genoegen de eerste solotentoonstelling van Marc Janssens bij Verduyn Gallery voorstellen; A Fake Goodbye—een intieme blik op verlies, herinnering, jeugd, afscheid, en menselijke kwetsbaarheid.
Marc Janssens is een hedendaagse beeldhouwer die zich onderscheidt met zijn krachtige en fragiele figuren die haast overlopen van emotionele geladenheid. Van keramiek tot brons, papier tot hout, ijzerdraad tot gevonden objecten. Marc Janssens’ herkenbare visuele beeldtaal ontleedt zich op poëtische wijze. Elk stuk is een conversation piece met een eigen verhaal en expressie, maar heeft terzelfdertijd iets universeels. Janssens toont niet een mens, maar de mens. Een veruitwendiging van de innerlijke mens die in ieder van ons lijkt te schuilen—nadat alle muren rond ons gesloopt worden en we van onze façades worden ontdaan. Tussen tederheid en humor, fantasie en realiteit, obsceniteit en intimiteit.
